Malignant Melanoma

Excessive and chronic sun exposure is a major risk factor in developing Malignant Melanoma. It may arise alone or from a preexisting mole and there may be a hereditary predisposition associated with it; people with many or large moles and/or a family history of melanoma should be examined regularly by a dermatologist.

Additionally, adults should regularly perform self-examinations. Look out for changes in moles, freckles, and beauty marks. Early detection and treatment may prevent disfigurement and possible death.

Melanoma may be prevented with proper protection from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
