Skin Fungus

Tinea versicolor is a common skin condition caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin's surface, causing scaling and uneven skin color. Tinea sometimes causes itching. Tinea is treated with either oral or topical medications.

Athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, is a very common fungal infection that grows on the skin, especially the feet. In some cases the irritation is between the toes, sometimes there is redness and scaling on the soles and sides of the feet or blisters may develop. Athlete's foot is contagious but can generally be prevented by keeping the feet clean and dry. Treatment includes antifungal creams or pills. Athlete's foot must be treated or secondary bacterial infections may develop.

Nails that become discolored or thickened may have a fungal infection. There may also be partial nail loss or debris under the nail. Fungal Infection of the nail can spread from one nail to another and to adjacent skin. Topical creams and lacquers or oral medication may be prescribed.
