Squamous cell carcinoma develops in the skin’s epidermal layer. Typically found on the ear, face, lip, or mouth, it appears as a bump or red scaly patch. It is capable of metastasizing if not treated early and is known to spread locally, potentially causing significant disfigurement. The major risk factors for developing this cancer are excessive exposure to sun over many years, especially when accompanied by fair skin and blond or red hair, overexposure or chronic exposure to x-rays, and long-term treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential. Adults should regularly perform self-examinations.
